Emotionally Resilient Living - Start Here

We are living in a time of unprecedented uncertainty and change, unplanned, and often unwelcome. Many are feeling anxious and afraid and searching for an anchor in the storm for some sense of stability.

I think it is safe to say that there has never been a greater need for resilience.

How Resilient Are You Now?

Ask anyone you know what resilience means to them and there’s a good chance they’ll say something about bouncing back from a crisis, so you may be surprised to learn that building your capacity for resilience is as much about prevention and growth as recovery.

In recent years researchers have found that highly resilient people tend to be healthier and live longer, are more successful in school and work, happier in relationships, and are less prone to depression.

So, how resilient are you now?

I’ve found that as long as they can get through difficult periods with only minor bumps and bruises, most people consider themselves to be resilient enough.

But that is not resilience, it’s survival.

Resilient Living is about thriving, it’s becoming the anchor in your storm.

Resilience does not erase life’s difficulties. Those with a high level of resilience don’t see life through rose-colored lenses. They feel their emotions but are not ruled by them.

They don’t always succeed but don’t let failure stop them because they are self-motivated and willing to do the hard stuff, trusting that as long as they keep moving forward, they will find a path.

Emotional resilience gives people the confidence and inner strength to tackle problems head-on, find opportunities in adversity, and grow stronger for the experience, not despite it.

I challenge you to embrace and trust the power you have within you to create the quality and course of your life journey.

It’s Never Too Late

While we are each born with a measure of resilience, it is important to understand that it is neither universal nor finite.

What this means is that you can be resilient in one area of your life and not in another, and what resilience you do have can actually erode over time if you fail to challenge and stretch yourself.

But regardless of your capacity for resilience now, with time and consistent effort, anyone can substantially increase their inner strength and ability to thrive even under the harshest circumstances.

The topics covered here will help you identify areas that need attention and self-defeating patterns so that you can begin to strengthen your personal foundation.

The bottom line is that no matter which path you choose to take in life, it will inevitably come down to what is surely one of the most important decisions you will ever make – whether you will be the passenger or the driver for the journey.

When the world feels like it’s been turned upside down, and you’re uncertain what tomorrow will bring, it’s human nature to dig in and try to wait out the storm.

It’s time to accept the reality that we still have a long, tough road ahead of us before we emerge from the storm created by the coronavirus pandemic.

Change is in the air, and we each have a pretty big choice to make.

You can resist, cling to the hope of someday returning to the way things used to be (they won’t), and risk ending up feeling stuck and powerless.

Or, you can keep moving forward and create a path through these uncertain times.

This is the way to discover, maybe for the first time, that you are not powerless, that no matter what obstacles or unexpected detours the future may bring – even a global pandemic – you will figure it out, and become stronger for the experience.

As we continue this journey it is my mission to help members of the ERL community to create that path. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride, but we’ll embrace the adventure!
